Now more than ever, there is a proliferation of choices for retailers in many food and beverage segments. Food processing companies compete with one another in a number of ways, including for shelf space in stores and in terms of specific product innovation. More and more food and beverage manufacturing companies are offering convenient and affordable alternatives to popular food items. Never before have business efficiency and a positive brand reputation for a food and beverage processor been so crucial.

While increased competition may be the "bad news" in the food processing industry, there are also some new opportunities emerging as well, as pointed out by a First Research industry study on food manufacturing:

Healthier Choices

As more and more people try to eat healthier, retailers will be looking for greater variety in terms of their healthy food selection. Many manufacturers are finding ways to reformulate their products to include healthier ingredients and appeal to this growing demographic. Organic, whole wheat, low-sodium and gluten-free are just some of the buzz words. Packaging smaller portions is also getting a good response -- the "100 calorie pack" is increasingly popular with the health-conscious looking to control portions.

Eco-Friendly Processing and Packaging

Green-minded consumers always feel good about buying foods manufactured in a way that leaves a small carbon footprint. They also gravitate toward eco-friendly packaging. New food packaging that promotes and reflects this ethos is likely to receive a positive response from retailers and consumers alike.

International Expansion

Many food processors are looking to "go global" and expand into fertile international markets. Emerging markets like Asia and Latin America are home to consumers whose average incomes are growing. There is a growing interest in Western foods in many emerging markets as well. Forging joint ventures with existing Asian or European manufacturers is one way to connect with these consumers. Your company can adjust popular brands to include some of the ingredients and flavors favored in the new market.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software

One of the best ways to streamline the entire manufacturing process and maximize efficiency is with enterprise resource planning (or "ERP") software. Implementing this software can take the guesswork out of creating the best infrastructure for your business. You'll also be able to monitor it for ongoing efficiancy. An ERP solution can help your business to control its resources, reduce manufacturing costs, automate compliance and ultimately improve profitability. Look for software that specifically serves the food and beverage industry and features lot tracking, the ability to track and change orders or execute controlled recalls, if need be.
