Seeing the Light in Manufacturing

Posted by MAX on Jul 8, 2014 12:00:00 PM

sunriseSince we typically talk about ERP and manufacturing software in our posts, we think it's time to change it up a bit. So today we'd like to talk about something a little different: natural light.

In the manufacturing industry, there is always an emphasis on the "latest and greatest" technological solution that can be used to improve your business in a variety of different ways. Nary a day goes by without a manufacturer researching, purchasing or implementing a new piece of equipment or technology with the intent of making the lives of employees easier, enhancing the overall safety of their facility and more.

In today's modern climate, however, many businesses are turning towards an unexpected solution with regards to all of these benefits and more: natural lighting. Many manufacturing plants are using natural light in innovative new ways on a daily basis that are more than worth exploring.

The Major Benefits

The major benefits of natural light sources in manufacturing include:

  • The native ability to enhance employee morale and productivity.
  • The ability to create a safer and more secure environment.
  • The ability to eliminate costly artificial light.

Improving Employee Productivity

One of the most important ways that natural lighting can benefit a manufacturing plant has to do with the affect that it has on employees. Many people don't realize that a prolonged exposure to artificial light sources, like the kind that many manufacturing plant employees go through for hours on a daily basis, can actually be detrimental to not only their mood but to their productivity as well.

One of the most important parts of running a successful manufacturing plant is morale. By using natural lighting solutions in and around your workplace environment, you can expect to see the moods and the general morale of your employees increase immediately. As we also believe that happy employees are productive employees, you would be able to see your productivity levels increase accordingly as a result.

Enhancing Facility Safety

When your employees are operating around pieces of heavy machinery, safety is always of the utmost concern. There is rarely a situation that qualifies as "somewhat dangerous" in an environment like a manufacturing plant. As a result, proper light around these pieces of equipment is one of the most important elements with regards to insuring the safety of everyone in the building.

Natural light sources, when placed strategically, can help make areas brighter and safer than ever before. Natural light tends to be much more filling in a space in a way that artificial light can't compete with. As a result, installing windows or skylights in just the right areas will help protect your employees in a hugely efficient way.

Reducing Energy Costs

Another significant way that manufacturing plants of all sizes can benefit from natural light solutions has to do with reducing energy costs. This point of fact is especially important for businesses that are already running on slim profit margins to begin with. Cutting your overall energy levels is one of the key ways to cut out one of your biggest expenses practically overnight.

Depending on the size of your manufacturing plant, you're probably spending a huge amount of money in energy costs just to keep the lights turned on each day. Employees can't work in the dark, which is why these costs were always seen in the past as something of a necessary evil. With natural lighting solutions, however, you can achieve all of the other benefits that come with natural light in a way that is significantly more cost effective.

By installing large windows, skylights and other ways to let natural light into your plant, you can begin to replace the artificial light sources that are costing so much money. Though you likely won't be able to outright replace every last bit of artificial light in your plant (it will get cloudy, after all), you can dim your interior light sources to act as a compliment to the natural light throughout the day.
